[AIMP4][AIMP5][AIMP6] Prevent Resampling - bit-perfect sample rate switching

Name: Prevent Resampling
Version: 2.5.4

Note: This first post is kept up to date for the latest version. The full documentation and all changes are on GitHub. (A Russian version follows below.)

Unofficial plugin: Prevent Resampling is not made or supported by the AIMP team. Please report problems with it to me (in this topic or on GitHub), not to the AIMP developers.

Hi everyone,

automatic sample rate switching has been requested here for years (e.g. in this thread). So I wrote a plugin that does it outside of AIMP's own settings: a 44.1 kHz album plays at 44.1 kHz, a 96 kHz album at 96 kHz - Windows, Voicemeeter and your DAC follow the music, nothing gets resampled. It is switched off after installation, so nothing changes until you enable it.

A small note on the "how": this was much harder than expected. With ASIO, WASAPI exclusive and DirectSound (and on Linux) AIMP plays with its own fixed output rate, which it reads only at start-up, and a plugin has no way to change it while AIMP is running. So the plugin relies on workarounds: an undocumented Windows interface for the device format, Voicemeeter's remote API, and - only if you enable the experimental restart option - it changes AIMP's output rate in AIMP's settings and restarts AIMP (hidden behind a still image of the window). The AIMP developers do not recommend this approach, so please use the restart option only if you know what it does. My first attempt (an internal 1.0 alpha) did not work with AIMP at all, which is why the first public version is already 2.5.4.

Please note: I could only test it with real hardware on Windows 64-bit. All builds were also tested in AIMP 4.70, 5.40 and 6.00 (32/64-bit, Windows 7-11 emulated with Wine) and in the native AIMP for Linux - feedback is very welcome, especially with ASIO, WASAPI exclusive and Linux.

Before you enable it

• Only use it while you are listening to music and nothing else - it changes the sample rate of your audio devices with every track, other programs playing sound are affected too.

• Voicemeeter users: tick Auto restart audio engine (all devices) in Voicemeeter's settings.

• For truly bit-perfect output, switch off crossfade, equalizer / DSP and ReplayGain, and keep the volume at 100 %.
• Restart option (ASIO / WASAPI exclusive / DirectSound): it changes AIMP's own output rate setting and restarts AIMP. It is off by default - leave it off if you don't want that.

Features

• WASAPI shared and Voicemeeter (engine rate and all hardware outputs A1-A5) - switched while playing

• ASIO, WASAPI exclusive, DirectSound: optional, experimental AIMP restart with the new rate (off by default), the track continues at the same position

• Detects the output automatically, falls back to integer multiples (44.1 -> 88.2 kHz), can restore the original rates when AIMP closes
• Settings page in Preferences -> Plugins -> Prevent Resampling with statistics, plus a built-in update check

• Linux: PipeWire is set to AIMP's own rate for now (no double resampling); following every track is planned

Installation
Both files are attached to this post (and also on GitHub):

• PreventResampling-2.5.4.aimppack - just double-click it

• PreventResampling.zip - the same plugin as a ZIP: drag it onto the AIMP window

AIMP installs the right build (Windows 32/64-bit or Linux) by itself. Restart AIMP, then enable the plugin in Preferences -> Plugins -> Prevent Resampling -> General.

Requirements: AIMP 4.70, 5 or 6 on Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 / 11 (32/64-bit), or AIMP 6 for Linux.

Changes: first version in the forum - the complete changelog is on GitHub and in the plugin (About tab).

Known issues: with the restart option the still image sometimes disappears too early, and a maximized AIMP window comes back in normal size - both will be fixed in the next version.

Planned: AIMP restart on Linux, quick on/off via menu or hotkey, pausing while other programs play sound, a rate limit (e.g. max. 96 kHz), German and Russian translations.

Download & source code: GitHub - Prevent Resampling for AIMP - more details, screenshots and the changelog are there.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome here or as an issue on GitHub (please not to the AIMP team) - please attach PreventResampling.log (General tab -> "Open folder").

Prevent Resampling

• Пользователям Voicemeeter: включите Auto restart audio engine (all devices) в настройках Voicemeeter.

Linux.

This is a terrible, clumsy solution. We cannot recommend it to users.

Thank you for your honest feedback, Artem - I fully understand it.

You are right: the plugin works around AIMP instead of with it. Changing AIMP.ini and restarting AIMP is not how a plugin should behave, and I don't want you to get bug reports caused by my plugin. I will make this clearer in the first post: it is an unofficial plugin, not supported by the AIMP team, and problems should be reported to me on GitHub, not to you. The restart option is off by default and marked as experimental.

The only reason for these workarounds is that I found no clean way to do it: with ASIO, WASAPI exclusive and DirectSound, AIMP resamples to its fixed output rate, and the SDK has no way to change it while AIMP is running.

Would you consider one of these in AIMP or in the SDK?

• an option "Follow the sample rate of the track" for WASAPI exclusive / ASIO, or
• a way for plugins to change the output rate (re-initialize the output) at runtime.

With either of them, I would remove the AIMP.ini/restart part from the plugin completely. If there is a cleaner approach you would prefer, I am happy to change the plugin accordingly.

No, I’ve said many times why we haven’t done this in the player yet, but my opinion isn’t being heard.

I did hear you. I read your reasons in reply #69 of the main topic and answered them there https://aimp.ru/forum/index.php?topic=53609.msg474143#msg474143. We just see it differently, and that's fine: it's your player and your decision.

I mainly thought of a solution that would make users that constantly asked for it happy + myself I would never ask for a feature that you and your Team have already stated to not do. A SDK change for it to make it happen for Plugin coders would have been great anyways.

I accept the "no" and won't ask for this again, neither in AIMP nor in the SDK. The plugin stays my own unofficial project, at my own risk and with my own support - the first post now says that clearly, and you don't have to do anything for it.

Thanks for your time, and for AIMP.
