AIMP vs WMP Sound Output

What accounts for the significant difference in audio quality between AIMP and Windows Media Player (WMP)? Both players use their default settings, and I haven't enabled any equalizer or third-party software to adjust the sound driver. I find that WMP produces clearer and crisper sound, while AIMP seems to have a lower volume but a richer bass tone.
